Health Threat: Monosodium Glutamate

I am sure that you notice the sign "No MSG" on some established food places especially in Chinese restaurants. If you are wondering what is MSG stands for? MSG means Monosodium Glutamate, a chemical substance used to enhance flavor and taste of any foods. MSG was first used in China as a flavor enhancer and is now widely used globally. There are numerous health experts who criticize MSG saying that it has many effects in human health if consumed regularly. Let us see deeply if this accusations are true or not.

MSG are widely used for food seasoning and was classified by the Foods and Drug Administration as "safe" to use. MSG are used for soups, pastas, meat dishes, vegetable dishes, processed foods and even in canned foods. So what is the real reason why it MSG is always drag to criticism by many? Although these criticism were reported to FDA, the bureau is out of words with MSG as of the moment.

As the food scare continuous to rise over the years, MSG is still not slowing in production. Ajinomoto, world's leading MSG producer recently said that monosodium glutamate is a natures wonder, a gift for us to indulge as they address the different health hazards that was linked MSG. For decades, Ajinomoto Corporation in Japan has never been in any legal battle from this accusations because there was never really a scientific connection between diseases and MSG.

Below are some of the food scare dilemma that were linked to MSG.

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Facial tightness
  • Obesity
  • Food addiction
  • Numbness
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain
  • Weakening of immune system
  • Cancers
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney Problems
  • Heart Palpitations

Researchers where not convinced about this allegedly disease causing chemical as there study have found no definitive evidence that monosodium glutamate was responsible for the occurrences of these diseases. Health experts say however, that the so called MSG symptom complex is nothing but typical body reaction to the chemical or in other words "allergic effects". These symptoms are mostly short term and don't require treatment at all.

The only way to react regarding this issue is to avoid the chemical on whatever the real cause of it. It may be hard to avoid MSG as it can be found in every fast foods we dine in. We must avoid eating in restaurants if you want to get away from MSG. Don't patronize canned foods and processed meats because these foods all have MSG content.

Monosodium glutamate is a questionable chemical that we really can't tell if its dangerous to our health or not. The best way is to eat more natural foods like vegetables and fruits and avoid processed ones. Cook your own dish and stay at home, this way you save money and you assure your health more from the MSG food scare.

If MSG is so unsafe, why do the Japanese have the longest life span and level of health when they add it to nearly everything they eat? Glutamates are naturally produced by your body, too. That must mean your body itself is full of dangerous seasonings!

Good comment. That is your view. However, can you prove that all Japanese are taking MSG? Wonder why most, if not all health organizations are promoting MSG as a health hazard and even tagged this substance as "addictive"?

If you are sure about your comment that MSG is not dangerous to health, incorporate it in your daily meals and go indulge yourself to restaurants such as KFC and macdonalds where MSG is an abundant ingredient. If you still have a healthy body after a year, you are free to comment again in this post.

Thanks...
