Sleep Deprivation Can Contribute To Obesity
Genetics, lack of exercise and too much eating are not just the obvious factors in gaining weight. Another factor that contributes to obesity is lack of sleep. People ignores the essence and benefits of having enough sleep and continuous to enjoy their busy and active lives even at night.
A new study shows that frequent changes in sleep patterns can help people gain weight at a faster pace. Sleep deprivation is related to a higher body mass index (BMI), one of the markers of obesity.
Seattle Children's Research Institute, conduct the study in which over 700 teens participated. They monitor all activities especially their sleep patterns and calorie intake. Each teen wore accelerometer to determine the level of activity and were interviewed for some questions. One of the major questions involved the their sleep pattern activities during weekday and weekends.
Results showed that boys from middle school experienced highest BMI which are all related to sleep activities, this is followed by the boys in high school. For girls, the highest BMI are those who have less sleep during the weekends.
Sleep plays a vital role in our health. Lacking thereof will not only deteriorates our immune system but can also increase the risk of being overweight in both teens and adults. This study is only the beginning of many health benefits of having a good night sleep.
The study says that sleep deficit effects more than just the waistline, it also has a tremendous effect on mental capabilities, skill performance, and the ability to remain alert and attentive to many situations. The study further suggests that people who slept fewer than 6 hours a night will likely have higher risk of serious health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular health and depression.
It is always suggested in this health blog that people must achieve at least 7 hours a night of straight sleep. It is more ideal to sleep in a pitch black room as this can help our mind to sleep in a calm environment which makes our brain more relax and comfortable. So remember that obesity can be your risk when you deprive yourself from having enough sleep at night.
