Facts About Stroke
I remembered my grandfather suffered a stroke way back in the 90's. He suffered a very serious stroke attack where half of his body was paralyzed, his speech was greatly affected and his vision got worst. I was still a kid back then and I thought that stroke was caused by a heart disorder, but I was wrong.
A stroke is a brain attack not similar to a heart attack. It occurs when the blood and oxygen supply to the brain is interrupted. Due to lack of blood, the brain cells struggles to do their duties and begins to die. The lack of oxygen will make the situation worst and take note that once a brain cell dies, it does not regenerate.
Stroke occurs when a blood vessels in the brain burst which are commonly caused by a blockage development inside the vessels. This will cause the blood to stop entering the brain resulting to serious disability or even death. As we all know, the brain is the body's main control room, it controls everything we do. Damaging the brain by lack of oxygen and blood will greatly affects body's abilities such as speech, mobility, muscle movements, vision and many more. The abilities that will be affected depends entirely on where the stroke happens in the brain and what functions it controls.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death worldwide after cancer and heart diseases. What are the cause of this disease? The number one cause of the disease is the cholesterol build up on the inner wall of the artery causing it to narrow, hardens or weakens and eventually blocks the blood flow to the brain. What causes the build up of cholesterol in the body? Below are most common causes of cholesterol build up.
- Fatty foods like pork and beef
- Processed foods like hotdog, bacon, ham, etc.
- Chicken skin and egg yolk
- Some shellfish
- Dairy products
Other other risk factors are:
- Lack of exercise
- Family history
- Alcohol and smoking
- Obesity
- Age factor and gender
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
Once a build up of bad cholesterol blocked your arteries, stroke is definitely inevitable! The type of damage a person can suffer depends on the region of the brain affected. Some people may suffer mild and passing effects but others may experience serious and lasting health problems.
To prevent stroke from making a big impact on a suspected victim, you should know the various symptoms of a lurking stroke disaster. This will help you to have ample time to rush the patient to the near by hospital and prevent serious stroke attack. Below are some of the known stroke symptoms.

- Sudden weakness of the body
- Numbness
- Sudden severe headache
- Sudden dizziness, imbalance posture and walking
- Confusion and difficulty in speech and understanding others
- Do a stroke test
Face - Ask the patient to smile, if the one side of the face drops, a stroke will happen.
Arm - Ask the patient to raise their arm. If one side drift down, a stroke will occur.
Speech - Ask the patient to repeat any sentence. If the patient is experiencing speech trouble, an emergency is about to happen.
Time - Time is very critical in this situation. Call your local hospital or ambulance immediately.
Every second counts in a stroke victim's immediate treatment. Every cell will die in just minutes if the oxygen is deprived from entering the brain. Although there are anti clot drugs available, this must be applied within three hours from the initial attack. Once a suitable brain tissue has died, its corresponding body functions will be disabled as well. That's why time and prevention is very important.
How to diagnose a stroke victim? The patient will undergo a brain CT-Scan to determine if the symptoms are coming from a blocked blood vessel or a bleeding one. Additional tests are necessary to locate the whereabouts of the blood clot.
From here, doctors can determine which type of stroke had occur. There are two types of stroke, the Hemorrhagic Stroke and Ischemic Stroke. Ischemic occurs when the bleeding comes under the membrane surrounding the brain while the Hemorrhagic Stroke happens when the bleeding occurs within the brain itself.
Hemorrhagic stroke is difficult to treat compared to Ischemic type where anti blood clot drugs treatments are enough to normalize blood flow. Hemorrhagic type needs to manage high blood pressure, brain swelling and bleeding constantly.
Therapies are necessary for all stroke patients. Speech, talk and physical therapies are required to regain the lost abilities of a stroke victim. For years, therapy treatments is the best recourse for all victims of this disease. This can help re-establish their confidence and help restores their independence as much as possible.
Lastly, how to prevent blood clots? Although there are risk factors that are not controllable like aging, gender and family history, other risk factors can still be prevented. To prevent stroke in your life, you just have to avoid its causes. Below are some natural methods on how to prevent any type of stroke.
- Total lifestyle change

- Monitor your blood pressure
- Regular check up when you hit 40 years old
Stroke is a very serious disease. Most patients who suffered mild stroke will eventually regain their lost abilities but for those who suffered greater stroke damage, life long treatments are necessary for their disabilities.
