Men's Health: Impotence
Impotence or in medical terms "Erectile Dysfunction", is the common erection problem in men. The inability to sustain an erection during sexual intercourse. Impotency affects an estimated number of 15 million Americans in the US alone. Erectile dysfunction is said to be one of the major cause of couple related problems worldwide.
This disorder does not only affects the actual erection in men, it also affects sexual desire, poor libido, ejaculation and orgasm. Although erectile dysfunction refers specifically to problems achieving and maintaining an erection.
Symptoms of erectile dysfunction
- Brief erection
- Total inability to achieve erection
- Inconsistent erection
Symptoms occur only when sex is initiated or some cases occurs in a specific time. These symptoms can make help diagnose impotence disorder in patients having difficulty in sex.
Impotence incidence are common in men as they age, but definitely not part of the ageing process. Studies suggests that about 5% of men experience erectile dysfunction when they reached 40 years old. At age 65, the percentage increases between 15% to 25%. What are the cause of erectile dysfunction? To achieve proper erection, two chambers of corpora cavernosa must be filled by blood, causing the penis to expand and stiffen. This process is triggered by the impulses from the brain and genital nerves. Blocking these impulses may cause sexual impotency.
Impotency can also be caused by other existing factors such as diseases, injury or drug side effects. Any injury or incidence that may impair the blood flow to corpora cavernosa may lead to erectile dysfunction.
Improper lifestyle can also lead to sexual erection problems. This includes smoking, excessive drinking, lack of exercise and obesity. Surgical procedures can also lead to impotency especially bladder, prostate type of surgeries as this may damage the nerves and the blood vessels in the penis. Impotency may also be caused by psychological interference.
Fortunately, erectile dysfunction is curable. Impotent men at any age can be cured due to advancement in medical technology. Medical drugs such as PDE inhibitors are used to increased blood flow to the penis. The most common drug for this is Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
Other treatments includes injections, pellets insertion to the urethra, vacuum devices, implants, psycho and alternative therapies, surgeries and of course total lifestyle change. Below are some tips to prevent impotence in men.
- Eat healthy foods
- Regular exercise
- Stop vices (smoking and alcohol)
- Keep your sugar level in normal state
- Maintain your weight
Erectile dysfunction is a very serious sexual disorder in men. Not only it will ruin your sexual life, it can also damage your marital relationship.
