Understanding Fever

Fever is my worst enemy, I really don't like having a fever. It makes me weak and less effective in whatever I do. So what are the most important points you have to know when you experience fever? Read on and learn why fever can be a positive sign for your body.

First, fever is an abrupt increase in body temperature. Normal temperature is 37 C, beyond that point is already a fever symptom. When a person is suffering from high body temperature (usually 37.2 C above), it's usually a sign that something is going on in your body. Your antibodies are working double time to solve any abnormalities inside your bodies. This is the reason why you suffer fever.

Fever is not a really a serious illness unless it reaches 39.4 C and above. However in children and infants, a slight increase in body temperature could mean a serious body infections. The severity of this illness does not indicate the seriousness of the underlying condition. This means that a minor illness may cause a high fever and serious diseases may cause low fever.

Although fever goes away within a few days by just drug medications, it should also not be ignored especially with children. Diseases like dengue and the recent plague H1N1 virus are all fever initiated diseases. A follow up medical consultation is still advisable.

In general, fever can be a symptom for many different diseases in both minor and serious illnesses. But it over all key role is to fight various body infections. So fever does not always mean your sick, your body is just experiencing chemical reactions which is a good sign that you are healthy because your defense mechanism is working efficiently.

You can measure your bodyfever temperature through a thermometer placing it under your arm pit or under the tongue. The patient should be isolated and comfortable as much as possible. A 30 C water bath can help lower body temperature but never use ice or alcohol for fever as this proves no effect and and pose additional health risks.

In most cases, fever should be left untreated unless the body temperature reaches severe heights. Consult your physician once you are troubled with high fever, it may pose some serious illnesses.
