What Is Nausea?

Have you heard the term nausea? You can always hear this term as one of the symptoms for many diseases such as dehydration, pregnancy symptoms, food poisoning and many more. What is nausea and how can you treat this disease?

Nausea is defined as a sensation of unease or discomfort in the upper stomach with the need to vomit. This condition can be acute, temporary or prolonged depending on different causes. Vomiting perse can be psychological in nature and could pose no health hazards.

nauseaNausea can originate from other disorders that are coming from other organs of the body particularly in the gastrointestinal tract which includes the stomach, esophagus, small intestine and gallbladder. Below are some of the known causes of constant or temporary vomiting.

  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Improper medications
  • Food poisoning
  • Disequilibrium (out of balance caused by motion sickness or vertigo)
  • Pregnancy
  • Dehydration
  • Serious diseases such as pancreatitis, meningitis, appendicitis and many more
Nausea works through the vomiting center in the brain were it gives signals from nausea sensations that results to physical act of vomiting.

If the cause of nausea is dehydration, regular rehydration with oral electrolyte treatment is recommended. Medications such as Dimenhydrinate and antihistamine antiemetic are good alternative treatment for nausea and vomiting.

Nausea may indicate a more serious condition but most short term nausea are generally not life threatening. Once you suffer from extensive vomiting, consult your doctor immediately to learn the real cause of your symptoms.
