Facts About Heartburn
Heartburn or medically known as pyrosis or acid indigestion is a burning sensation in the chest, behind the breastbone. The pain occurs mainly in the chest but may radiate to the neck, throat or at an angle of the jaw. It is often worse when lying down or bending over.
This condition often occurs when you consumed large quantities of food or foods that contains strong spices, high in fats and acid content. Heartburn that are caused by eating and drinking often suffers from difficulty in swallowing that indicates esophageal spasms.
Heartburn is associated with other symptoms such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastritis, where there's an interruption of the normal flow of gastric acid. Although heartburn is a common condition and pause little health threat, the individual suffering from this disease can feel a total discomfort and could be a symptom of another threatening disease.
Other ailments such as dyspepsia and indigestion are often used interchangeably with heartburn because of quire similar symptoms. Dyspepsia is a combination of epigastric pain and heartburn while heartburn is commonly related to GERD. So there is a distinction between these two conditions.
Most people can manage this condition by simply changing their lifestyles and through the help of medicinal drugs. A frequent or severe heartburn should be consulted to a physician for immediate diagnosis and treatment.
