Skin Disease - Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease that affects the skin. It is a result of excessive skin cells production that is caused by an abnormal signals being sent by the immune system. Psoriasis often spread throughout the skin even in the scalp area of the head.

This skin disease however is not contagious but has been reported to have linked in an increased risk of stroke. Symptoms includes itchy, painful, and reddish or whitish hues of scaly patches. Types of psoriasis are plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic.

This skin disorder is a recurring disease which depends in severity from minor localized patches to complete body coverage. There are other symptom that even affects the fingernails and toenails (psoriatic nail dystrophy) but often an isolated cases. Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the joints which is called psoriatic arthritis.

Experts suggests that psoriasis mainly originates genetically and other psoriatic development can only be triggered by a skin injury medically known as Koebner phenomenon. Factors that can aggravate this disease includes environmental causes like stress, lifestyles and withdrawal of systemic corticosteroid.

There are various treatments that are known to help aid and cure psoriasis. Treatments are divided into three main types - topical, light therapy and oral medications.

Topical Treatment includes topical corticosteroids anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin D supplements, anthralin, topical retinoids, calcineurin inhibitors, salicylic acid, coal tar and various moisturizers. These treatment option is intended mainly for mild psoriasis. If severe conditions occur, it is best to combine topical treatment to light therapy treatments.

psoriasisLight Therapy uses either artificial or natural ultra violet light. It usually involves exposing the affected skin to controlled amounts of UV rays or sunlight, which is best combined with other medications. Light therapy include UVB Phototherapy, narrowband UVB therapy, goeckerman therapy, photochemotherapy or simple exposure to sunlight.

Oral Medications or Injected Drugs are prescribed by doctors only if other available treatments are not working. Oral medications and injected drugs should only be taken in a short period of time because it has known issues and side effects.
