How To Deal With Urinary Incontinence?

What will you do if you suddenly leak urine during an office meeting in your company? Seems an embarrassing and distressing situation especially if you are a woman. This medical condition is called Urinary Incontinence or simply known as UI.  

This medical condition usually results from an underlying but treatable health condition. Transient incontinence is triggered by uncommon factors such as medication, adrenal insufficiency, mental impairment, severe constipation and restricted mobility. Transient incontinence is considered as temporary urination disorder. 

What the common risks? Their are various causes of UI which can come from physical conditions, diseases or lifestyles. These are the following.

  • pregnancy / vaginal delivery

  • blockage of bladder

  • bladder cancer
  • stroke
  • spinal cord injury
Other causes includes:
  • alcohol consumption
  • too much consumption of caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, sodas)
  • smoking
  • diuretic medicines
UI commonly occurs suddenly and most often goes away once the cause is treated. A good example of this is the urinary tract infection-caused UI. Once the UTI disappears, same goes to UI condition. 

Incontinence usually occurs gradually and slowly becomes worse. UI can highly affect your social life and will cause you to become less active. It may also cause frequent urinary tract infection and groin irritation. So it is important to get rid of the cause of UI to sustain control of urination.

Anyone are at risk of UI even children. Treatment options includes behavior management, conservative treatment, medications and surgery for severe cases. The success of treatment depends on the proper diagnosis of UI.

This includes stress test, urinalysis, blood tests, ultrasound imaging, cystoscopy, urodynamics.
