What Is Biofeedback?
I recently wrote an article about Bell's Palsy and one of the alternative remedies that I mentioned on that article is Biofeedback. So what is this alternative regimen that is said to help cure some illnesses?
According to Wikipedia, Biofeedback is a process of becoming aware of various physiological functions using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will.
Processes includes brainwaves, skin conductance, heart rate, pain reception and muscle tone, which can help relieve Bell's Palsy. Practitioners suggests that biofeedback can be used to improve health or physical performance, as well as the physiological changes which occurs in conjunction with the changes to thoughts, emotions and behavior.

Patients had found this treatment to be effective in headaches and migraines, considering that this type of treatment is completely a new field. Biofeedback is currently practiced by physicians, physiologists, kinesiologists and psychologists.
How it works? Biofeedback is performed through the use of Electrodes, an electronic device which look like stickers with wires attached. This device is attached to the patient's skin then asked to meditate or relax to meet the desired response depending on what the patient wants to achieve. This could be muscle relaxation, stable heart rate or temperature. This device also reports progress in real time through changes in speed of beeps or flashes, pitch or tone quality.
The results of biofeedback are measured through the following.
- electrical conductivity of the skin
- skin temperature
- muscle tension
- heart rate
- brain-wave activity
Biofeedback is useful especially to stress-related conditions. It is also advisable for conditions that pertains to muscle dysfunctions. Other health conditions that are said to have positive effects to biofeedback are the following.
- asthma
- muscle injury
- insomnia
- pain management
- hypertension
- digestive problems
- posture problems
- tennis elbow
- incontinence
- attention deficit disorder
- hyperactivity
- twitching of the eyelids
- irritable bowel syndrome
- constipation
